Even the Most Expensive Suit Looks Bad If It Doesn’t Fit
A bespoke suit is an investment in your appearance. But even the finest Italian fabric and most skilled tailoring can’t compensate for poor fit. The truth is, fit is the single most important factor in how a suit looks on you. Here are the 5 most common suit fit mistakes — and how to fix them.
Mistake 1: Shoulder Overflow
The jacket shoulder should end exactly where your natural shoulder ends. If the shoulder seam extends past your shoulder point, the jacket looks too big and creates unsightly bunching. If it falls short, the jacket looks squeezed and the sleeve head collapses.
The fix: The shoulder is the one part of a suit jacket that cannot be altered. This is why bespoke tailoring is so valuable — the shoulder is built to YOUR exact shoulder line from the start. When trying on any jacket, check the shoulder first.
Mistake 2: Jacket Length Too Short
The trend toward short, slim-fit jackets has created a generation of men wearing jackets that barely cover their seat. A properly fitted jacket should cover your entire seat and reach the base of your thumb when your arms are at your sides. Short jackets create a disproportionate silhouette and look juvenile.
The fix: For a timeless look, the jacket should end at the mid-seat. For a modern look, no higher than 2/3 of the seat. Avoid jackets that ride up when you sit.
Mistake 3: Trouser Break Issues
The “break” is the fold where the trouser meets the shoe. Too much break (heavy pooling of fabric) looks sloppy. No break at all can look too casual or trendy.
The ideal break depends on your style:
- Full break — Traditional. The trouser rests on the shoe with a noticeable fold. Best for conservative business settings.
- Half break — The modern standard. A slight fold at the shoe. Versatile and clean.
- No break — The trouser just touches the shoe with no fold. Modern and sharp, but can expose socks.
The fix: Ask your tailor for a half break as the default. It works in virtually every setting and photographs well.
Mistake 4: Chest Gaping
When you button your jacket, the chest should lie flat against your body. If there’s a gap between the jacket and your chest — or if the lapels pull away from your shirt — the jacket is too tight or poorly constructed. This is one of the most common issues with fused, off-the-rack suits.
The fix: A floating canvas chest piece (used in all Regal Stitch suits) naturally conforms to your chest curvature, eliminating gaping. During your basted fitting, your tailor checks specifically for chest balance.
Mistake 5: Sleeve Length
Jacket sleeves should end at the wrist bone, allowing 1–1.5 cm of shirt cuff to show. Too long (covering the shirt entirely) makes your arms look stubby. Too short (showing too much shirt) looks like you outgrew the jacket.
Trouser length is equally important. The trouser should break slightly at the shoe — no dragging on the ground, no exposing the ankle (unless that’s your intentional style).

Bonus: The Collar Gap
A well-fitted jacket collar should sit snugly against your shirt collar with no gap. If you can see daylight between the jacket collar and shirt collar, the jacket doesn’t fit properly — usually due to posture differences the jacket wasn’t built to accommodate.
The fix: This is another reason bespoke tailoring matters. A bespoke pattern accounts for your posture (forward tilt, upright, etc.) and builds the collar to sit perfectly.
