The fabric you choose determines how your suit looks, feels, drapes, and lasts. It’s the single most important decision in the bespoke process — and yet most men know surprisingly little about suiting fabrics. In this guide, we break down the world of suit fabrics so you can make an informed choice.
Understanding Fabric Weight
Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (gsm) and determines how the suit behaves in different climates and occasions:
- Lightweight (200–250gsm) — Ideal for tropical climates and summer wear. Breathable, drapes well, resists wrinkling. Perfect for Bangkok’s warm weather.
- Mid-weight (260–320gsm) — The most versatile weight. Suitable for year-round wear in temperate climates. Excellent for business suits.
- Heavyweight (330–400gsm) — Warm, substantial, and luxurious. Best for winter suits, flannel trousers, and cold-weather formalwear.
Key Fabric Types
Worsted Wool
The most common suiting fabric. Worsted wool uses long, combed fibers to create a smooth, crisp fabric with excellent drape. It’s durable, wrinkle-resistant, and available in weights from lightweight tropical to heavy flannel. If you’re buying your first bespoke suit, worsted wool is the safest choice.
Flannel
A soft, brushed fabric with a distinctive matte texture. Flannel is warmer than worsted wool and has a luxurious, tactile quality. It’s perfect for winter suits, trousers, and three-piece ensembles. Grey flannel trousers are a wardrobe staple.
Cashmere
Ultra-soft, ultra-luxurious, and ultra-expensive. Cashmere is 3x warmer than wool and has an unmistakable feel. It’s best reserved for special-occasion suits or blended with wool for improved durability.
Linen
The quintessential summer fabric. Linen is incredibly breathable and has a relaxed, textured appearance. The downside: it wrinkles easily. For a more practical option, look for linen-wool blends that combine breathability with wrinkle resistance.
Cotton
Crisp, clean, and casual. Cotton suits are perfect for daytime events, garden parties, and warm-weather weddings. They’re less formal than wool but offer a fresh, modern aesthetic.
Silk Blends
Silk adds a subtle sheen and luxurious drape to suiting fabrics. Silk-wool blends are popular for evening wear and special occasions. They photograph beautifully and have a distinctive luster.
Understanding Super Numbers
You’ll often see “Super 120s,” “Super 150s,” or “Super 180s” on fabric labels. These numbers refer to the fineness of the wool fibers — the higher the number, the finer (and more expensive) the fabric.
- Super 110s–130s — The sweet spot for everyday business suits. Durable, affordable, and well-draped.
- Super 140s–160s — Finer, smoother, and more luxurious. Ideal for premium business and formal suits.
- Super 170s–200s+ — Ultra-fine, silky soft, and delicate. Best for special occasions and those who prioritize feel over durability.
Higher isn’t always better. Super 150s is often the ideal balance of luxury and practicality for most wearers.
